FG Launches Nigeria’s First AI-Powered Farmer Support Platform

Abuja, Nigeria —

15 November 2025

The Federal Government on Tuesday launched Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence–powered Farmer Support System, a development officials say will significantly improve crop monitoring, disease detection and advisory services for farmers nationwide.

The platform, introduced by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture during an event in Abuja, was developed in partnership with indigenous technology startups. It is designed to provide real-time analysis of crop conditions, identify diseases from uploaded images and offer location-specific recommendations to farmers.

Demonstrating the system to attendees, ministry engineers showed how the AI tool scans crop images and generates instant feedback on soil health, weather patterns and suitable planting schedules. Officials said the platform will also support early warning alerts for pest outbreaks and environmental threats.

The government noted that the service will be accessible through smartphones as well as solar-powered kiosks currently being deployed across rural communities. The kiosks, according to the Ministry, are aimed at ensuring that farmers without personal devices or stable network access can still benefit from the system.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Agriculture said the initiative forms part of the government’s strategy to modernise the sector and reduce annual losses attributed to poor diagnosis and delayed interventions. He added that the ministry expects the platform to improve national output and enhance food security over the next planting cycle.

Technical officials disclosed that additional features would be introduced in phases, including wider disease databases and regional data mapping to improve accuracy across the country’s diverse agro-ecological zones.

Stakeholders present at the event described the launch as a positive step toward integrating technology into mainstream farming practices and addressing long-standing productivity challenges.
