A group of final-year Library and Information Technology students at Kwara State University has developed a groundbreaking Smart Campus System designed to automate administrative processes, enhance student security, and improve learning efficiency across the university. The innovation, presented at the campus tech showcase last week, immediately drew attention from university officials and tech enthusiasts alike.
During the demonstration, the students showcased a central platform that integrates lecture scheduling, biometric attendance, campus navigation, cafeteria ordering, and security alerts. A mobile app that can be connected to the system to enable the students and staff to interact in real time, while an AI-powered analytics module helps university administrators monitor resource usage and predict potential bottlenecks in campus services.
Team leader, Oraefoka Ebere F., explained that the idea stemmed from recurring complaints about slow administrative processes and classroom overcrowding.
“We wanted to build a system that makes campus life easier, safer, and smarter. Our solution reduces queues, enhances security, and allows students to focus more on learning. My team being the 'Alpha team' brainstormed and achieved the great result after working on some documentation and some archives” she said.
During the live test, undergraduate students demonstrated how the system could automatically detect unauthorized campus entries and notify security personnel instantly. Faculty members who attended the demo were impressed, with one professor commenting,
“This system shows incredible promise. If fully implemented, it could serve as a model for universities nationwide. The professor applauded the Alpha team for their commitment and bringing innovation to life”
The team revealed that the platform was built using locally available software and cloud services, making it affordable and scalable for other institutions. Discussions are already underway with university management to pilot the system in select faculties before campus-wide deployment.
As news of the Smart Campus System spread, students, alumni, and education technology companies expressed interest in collaborating on further development. The project showcases how young Nigerian innovators are utilizing technology to address real-world educational challenges, demonstrating both creativity and technical expertise.
