Nigerian Fintech Company Launches Voice-activated Mobile Banking

Image
By  Felicity Ebere - A Nigerian fintech company, TeKodarPay, has launched a voice-activated mobile banking system that allows users to carry out financial transactions using only their voice. The new feature lets customers send money, pay bills, buy airtime and check account balances without tapping their screens. According to TeKodarPay, the technology is powered by an advanced AI voice engine trained to recognise natural speech patterns, local accents and pronunciation differences. The app also includes a “secure voice lock” that prevents unauthorized people from triggering transactions even if they try to imitate a user’s voice. Tech analysts say the move is one of the biggest innovations in Nigeria’s digital banking space this year, especially as fintechs continue to look for ways to simplify mobile transactions. TeKodarPay's CEO said the feature was built with inclusivity in mind. “We wanted to create something that works for everyone including people who cannot type easily,...

Abuja Begins Test Run of Electric Buses for Public Transport

Image
By  Adeyanju Tope - The Federal Capital Territory Administration has rolled out a pilot test of electric buses in Abuja as part of efforts to introduce cleaner and more affordable public transport. The test operation, which started this week, is happening in partnership with a Chinese clean-energy firm that manufactured the buses. For now, the vehicles will run on selected routes while officials monitor performance over a three-month period. Charging stations have already been installed in Garki and Wuse. Engineers say these will support the buses throughout the test phase and help determine how many more stations the city will need if the project is expanded. Some commuters who boarded the buses for the first time described the ride as quiet and smoother than the diesel buses currently used in the city. A few also noted that the buses feel more comfortable and environmentally friendly. Transport authorities say the test run is part of a gradual shift toward modernisin...

Nigerian Engineers Develop AI Drone for Security Surveillance

Image
By  Monsuru Toheeb - A team of engineers at Kwara State University has developed an AI-powered drone intended to support national security agencies in surveillance operations across the country. The drone, unveiled at the university’s technology laboratory, is equipped with night vision capabilities, motion-tracking sensors, and real-time video analytics. Officials explained that it can detect unusual activity and immediately alert security personnel, enabling faster response to potential threats. During a demonstration, the drone successfully identified simulated intrusions across a designated perimeter, transmitting live footage to control operators. Engineers said the system is designed to assist in monitoring borders, preventing vandalism, and reducing incidents of kidnapping in rural communities. Lagos Installs Smart Traffic Sensors to Tackle Gridlock

Image
Lagos, Nigeria By Oyebode Faith -   The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of smart traffic sensors on major highways as part of ongoing efforts to ease persistent congestion across the state. The devices, equipped with IoT-enabled cameras and real-time analytics software, are being deployed at key intersections to monitor vehicular movement and regulate traffic flow. Officials said the system automatically adjusts traffic signal timings based on vehicle density, allowing smoother movement during peak periods. During a demonstration at one of the test locations, engineers explained that the sensors transmit continuous data to the state’s traffic control centre, where LASTMA officers receive instant alerts on accidents, stalled vehicles and unusual traffic build-up. The system is also expected to support quicker dispatch of response teams during emergencies. Early observations from motorists show notable improvements on the Lekki–Ajah axis and parts of...
