A Nigerian technology company, EduTech Solar, has introduced the country’s first low-cost solar-powered laptop designed specifically for students in remote and underserved communities.

The device, unveiled in Lagos on Tuesday, is built to operate efficiently in areas with limited access to electricity. According to the company, the laptop fully charges after four hours of direct sunlight and delivers up to 10 hours of uninterrupted use, making it suitable for schools that rely heavily on alternative power sources.

EduTech Solar confirmed that the laptop comes preinstalled with essential educational materials, coding applications and offline research tools aimed at supporting learners who do not have regular internet access. Representatives at the launch noted that the device was developed in consultation with teachers and curriculum experts to ensure it aligns with academic needs across various levels.

Parents, educators and community leaders who witnessed the demonstration commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention in closing Nigeria’s widening digital learning gap. Several school administrators reported that the device could significantly reduce dependency on generators and improve access to computer-based instruction.

Company officials stated that distribution would begin in selected public schools before expanding to private institutions and community learning centres. Discussions are also underway with state education boards to support large-scale adoption.
