The Federal Capital Territory Administration has launched a pilot test of electric buses in Abuja as part of its efforts to introduce cleaner and more affordable public transportation.
The test operation, which began this week, is being conducted in partnership with a Chinese clean-energy firm that manufactured the buses. For now, the vehicles will operate on selected routes while officials will monitor their performance over three months.
Charging stations have already been installed in Garki and Wuse. Engineers say these will support the buses throughout the test phase and help determine how many more stations the city will need if the project is expanded.
Some commuters who boarded the buses for the first time described the ride as quieter and smoother than the diesel buses currently used in the city. A few also noted that the buses feel more comfortable and environmentally friendly.
Transport authorities say the test run is part of a gradual shift toward modernising Abuja’s transport system and reducing the city’s dependence on fossil-fuel vehicles.
