A team of engineers in Lagos has introduced a smart helmet for motorcycle riders that warns them when they exceed safe speeds and includes an SOS feature to alert emergency contacts in case of accidents.
During a field demonstration, riders tested the helmet on busy streets of Lagos. The device successfully tracked speed, sent warnings, and even transmitted a simulated crash alert to emergency responders.
Lead engineer, Adebayo Olanrewaju, explained,
“Motorcycle accidents are a leading cause of injury in Lagos. This helmet helps prevent crashes and saves lives by combining real-time alerts with safety technology.”
Riders who tried the helmet praised its comfort and responsiveness. Some suggested integrating navigation and ride tracking for additional convenience.
Road safety officials have expressed interest in partnering to roll out the helmets across commercial motorcycle fleets. Investors from local tech hubs are also evaluating large-scale production.
The smart helmet represents a growing trend of practical, safety-focused innovation emerging from Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, demonstrating how young engineers are applying technology to everyday problems.
